In this Local Lift, I’m shining the spotlight on a few more of my favorite Whidbey Island businesses. This week’s lineup includes Studio Sugar, Mad Batter Bakehouse, Orlando’s Southern BBQ, and Hot Shot Espresso.
Local Lift is one of the ways I like to support independent businesses here on Whidbey. I started this feature back at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic when local economies were struggling. With each Local Lift, I purchase gift certificates to local businesses and give them away to the community, all while sharing what makes each place so great.

If you love a bakery stop that feels like an entire experience, Mad Batter Bakehouse in Oak Harbor is a great spot to add to your “must visit” list. They’re a rotating bakery + coffee shop in Oak Harbor that has quickly become a favorite of the community. There’s always a new theme or seasonal special, whether you’re in the mood for cookies or some other baked treat, or you want to try one of their unique beverages. A few of their seasonal themes have included Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland, pirates, and Twilight.

Orlando’s Southern BBQ
Orlando’s Southern BBQ is a family-owned Oak Harbor restaurant, and it’s the perfect destination for when you’re craving classic comfort food. This highly rated Whidbey Island restaurant garners hundreds of rave reviews online, and has become a Whidbey staple. Most of their menu items are made from scratch daily, and you can count on Southern BBQ classics like brisket, ribs, pulled pork, mac & cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and much more. For a quick coffee stop, Hot Shot Espresso is a local go-to in Oak Harbor.
