7+ Things To Do with Kids During Winter Break on Whidbey Island

If your kiddos are on winter break and start to get bored (or catch serious case of cabin fever…!), this guide is here to the rescue! Here you’ll find TONS of ideas (many of them even free) for things to do with kids during winter break on Whidbey Island. These ideas are not only sure to cure cabin fever, but they’ll give you and your family a chance to bond and make some awesome memories over the holidays, too!

Library Activities

Our island’s libraries offer so many free, fantastic resources to our community, and if you have some downtime during winter break, it’s the perfect opportunity to take some time to see what our libraries are all about. There are preschool story times that include sing-alongs and crafts, gatherings for older kids where they can make a fun craft or enjoy drop-in lego playtime, and MUCH more. (There are also tons of different book clubs, lectures, and informational classes for adults as well.) And of course, when you’re at the library for the activity of the day, drop off your books and DVDs and check out some new ones!

On each library website, you’ll find a calendar of upcoming events and other helpful info about resources you can use:

Holiday Festivities

Spend winter break creating holiday memories and enjoy a couple of the festive shows happening on the island. On Sunday, December 22nd you can attend The Night Before Christmas Holiday Concert at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. This night of music featuring the Whidbey Island Orchestra and storyteller David Ossman is the perfect way to get kids extra excited about Christmas day! There’s also a performance of It’s a Wonderful Life happening at WICA during several dates in December, and older kids might appreciate attending this “audio cinematic experience.”

There are also a few other festive happenings during winter break—click here to see a long list of December events on Whidbey Island.

Games

For an extra-special treat, a day at Oak Bowl & Mario’s Pizza or The Machine Shop Arcade might be in order. Kids can bowl for reduced prices, and you might get a group together to buy a lane for Glow Bowling. And of course, there’s also an awesome arcade as well. For another great arcade experience, head to The Machine Shop Arcade for a family-friendly environment with a huge collection of games. They’ve got everything from classic pinball machines (there’s over 80 machines here!) to 20+ virtual reality games.

Playgrounds

Bundle up and take little ones to a playground to burn off all of that extra energy! Whidbey Island is home to *several* parks and playgrounds so you won’t have any trouble finding one, but if you want to take advantage of some of the most epic play structures on the island, check out my top playground recommendations right here. You can bring a hot mug of coffee or cocoa and relax on the sidelines, or get in your steps for the day while keeping an eye on the playground!

Community Center

South Whidbey Community Center has events and activities for all ages all year long, but over winter break you can drop by and enjoy things like parkour, papier-mâché, martial arts classes, and more. Take a look at December’s schedule here! It’s also definitely worth keeping an eye on the schedule for the rest of the year as well—there’s lots of other happenings at the community center.
